Be a hero…

Go to this site “The Hero Factory” and create your alter-ego superhero (male or female).  Here’s mine.  Interesting that for some one who abhors violence I chose a gun as an accessory – originally I had a spork but it just didn’t quite fit…. if you do create an alter ego let me know – I want to see….

The Last Nerdy the Snowman

As you may or may not know, I recycle defunct computer mouses (mice?) into Christmas ornaments. This computer mouse just screamed “I’m a snowman, I’m a snowman” to me. (That’s right on occasion computer equipment speaks to me, okay?) Anyway, I paid attention and released the inner snowman with a little paint. Since he is no longer functional as a mouse, I removed his little mouse ball, used his cable as a hanger and added some festive ribbon.  Nerdy is now a Christmas ornament that would spruce up anyone’s tree – computer geek or not.

Nerdy here is actually Nerdy the Second.  I made a Nerdy the First last year (top hat version).  Why you ask will this be the last Nerdy the Snowman – come on, I heard you – you want to know… okay, okay stop asking I’ll tell you.  Nerdy here is an old style Packard Bell mouse.  I’ve only found two of these so far in my scrounges.  I’ve become a bit of a connoisseur of computer mice.  Most computer mice are optical these days and the mechanical (ball-driven) mice are disappearing.  They used to come in all sorts of funky shapes now they are almost all the same size and shape and design.

So Nerdy here may be one of a kind unless I come across another little round mouse asking to be a snowman.  He’s for sale at my Etsy Shop – feel free to go take a look around the shop: CLICK HERE    I have things in the shop for the geeks and the geeks at heart.

Merry Recycled Christmas to all!

St. Henry of Fenestra

We all need a little help from above on occasion.  St. Henry may be just the one for you.   A most gifted mathematician and innovator, St. Henry joined the monastery at an early age devoting himself to bettering the lives of his fellow monks, whether they wanted it or not. He is credited with inventing the pocket protector, the personal parchment computation book and a listening device that worked in theory only. His death was most untimely – crashing through a large blue stained glass window while in the midst of an unsolicited lecture on proper file storage. His last words were said to have been “do you want to save the file…” Rumors circulated that St. Henry had been pushed. St. Henry is the patron saint of all who use word processing and spreadsheet programs and computer geeks in general.

This is an ACEO (2.5 x 3.5) size print of an image I digitally collaged, altered and printed on 65lb. acid free paper. The image appears on one side with the above information about St. Henry printed on the reverse side. The card comes in its own protective sleeve suitable for placing next to any computer where St. Henry can be of service.  Its available at my Etsy store – Amoonshadow – at $4.00 its a steal – go buy one today!

St. Elizabeth the Crafter a.k.a. St. Betsy of Etsy

St. Elizabeth the Crafter, also known as St. Betsy of Etsy, was a pious and dedicated craft person. Her use of Etsy to sell her wares led to the simple town folk labeling her a witch. St. Betsy was tried, convicted of witchery and ordered to be beheaded. At her execution, her last request was to be allowed to list one more item. Angels appeared with a laptop and assisted her in her final wish. Upon her martyrdom, St. Betsy became the patron saint of all Etsyians who can be heard murmuring ‘Heavens to Betsy’ every time their just listed item gets buried. A prayer to St. Betsy is printed on the back of the prayer card. I have St. Betsy’s card placed by computer to remind me not to get too serious about it all – its a business but it should be fun too.

This is a digitally collaged ACEO.  It is duplex printed with a prayer to St. Betsy on the back.

I really enjoy Photoshop – look for more images coming soon to my Etsy Shop.  If you don’t know what Etsy is – go take a look.  Its a great place to purchase handcrafted items – start thinking ahead for the holidays.

Jackson Pollock’s Keyboard

If he had ever seen a computer keyboard (which I don’t believe he ever did), Jackson Pollock might have done something like this to it. This is the second of my computer keyboard art pieces. I felt the technique Pollack used was particularly suited to my feelings toward the keyboard (See Keyboard No. 1). I attempted to keep the colors somewhat in the range of Pollock but they turned out brighter than his usual palette. Working on trying copy Pollock’s strokes, a task at which I failed, I realized how difficult it is to control paint when it is used in this manner.  I think each artist has a  signature that comes through in his or her brush strokes so that copying a Pollock, which at first glance seems like it should be an easy task is actually, I believe, more difficult than copying a representational painter such as Van Gogh.  His brush manipulation was instinctual and instinct is difficult to reproduce.

This piece is the size of a standard keyboard (obviously) and can be hung on a wall via its hanger (its own cable).

I was inspired by Alpine’s use of a computer monitor for a cat bed and came up with my own version.

This cozy little bed is suitable for a cat or a small pup, or even a very pampered bunny. It is a computer monitor that has been emptied of all components leaving a shell that I handpainted with my humble interpretation of Van Gogh’s Starry Night. The inside is also painted in soft blues and a silk pillow, which I hand-dyed with non-toxic blue/violet dye and hand stuffed, has been added for extra comfort. I’ve given the bed a light spray of varnish to protect it but I kept it light so as not to overwhelm the sensitive senses of our four legged friends. Omega (the beautiful kitty in the picture) was strolling by at a craft fair I recently did and found the bed quite comfortable.  So comfortable in fact that she will soon take up permanent residence!  Not to worry – I will gladly take custom orders.

Visit Alpine’s blog – she has some excellent ideas – you too will be inspired to do a little recycling-upcycling: http://alpinebutterfly.blogspot.com/

Also please note that the innards of the computer have been properly disposed of at a hazardous materials waste site.
