… and you talk about anything …

Gerry Rafferty passed away today.  I really didn’t know what he looked like and  I only knew him for a few of his songs – I never listened to an album.  But the songs that I remember of his are haunting and smart and evocative of times and places that live within us and out in the cold, night air.  I was truly saddened to hear of his passing.  Baker Street is capable of instantly stopping me in my tracks.  The sax solo hushes everything else and the man’s voice and lyrics say it all..

Right Down the Line” in its own way and for a myriad of reasons gets to me every time  – a near perfect love song.  Unfortunately the lyrics of “Stuck in the Middle With You” now carry a certain poignancy after reading this article about his Leaving Las Vegas-styled decline: The Lonely Road from Baker Street…

Yes I’m stuck in the middle with you,
And I’m wondering what it is I should do,
It’s so hard to keep this smile from my face,
Losing control, yeah, I’m all over the place,
Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right,
Here I am, stuck in the middle with you.

Well you started out with nothing,
And you’re proud that you’re a self made man,
And your friends, they all come crawlin,
Slap you on the back and say,
Please…. Please…..

Trying to make some sense of it all,
But I can see that it makes no sense at all,
Is it cool to go to sleep on the floor,
‘Cause I don’t think that I can take anymore
Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right,
Here I am, stuck in the middle with you.

This obituary from the Wall Street Journal made me feel a wee bit better about his passing – he at least had his daughter by his side.  gerry-rafferty-scottish-singer-dies-at-63/

Farewell Mr. Rafferty and thank you.  I hope you have found your way home.

Its official….

I am a jinx.  I haven’t watched an Orioles game in over a year (that’s right I’m an Orioles fan, I’m not ashamed to admit it – altho’ I probably should be).  Partly because I just haven’t been watching as much baseball as I used to and partly because no one in their right mind would broadcast an Orioles game (unless they’re playing the Yankees because the Yanks always get air time – I’ll refrain from stating just how much the Yankees suck … but they do).  The Orioles are at the bottom of the heap this year and last year, and the year before (if not at the very bottom then just a couple of inches from the very bottom).

Anyway, I just happened to come across a White Sox/Orioles game on WGN and caught the last few innings.  Firstly, may commend the WGN announcers for knowing how to broadcast a game – keep quiet if you don’t have anything to say that is of relevance to the game being played.  It was refreshing to watch and listen to the game without getting annoyed at the extreme close ups of someone’s  sweaty ears…. Whoops I digress … the score was 3-2 White Sox when I joined and it was 4-2 White Sox when it ended.

I dared to have hope when I started watching because the Orioles have been on a winning streak (is 4 games a winning streak?) since Buck Showalter joined the team as manager.  I don’t know 2/3rds of the players on the team anymore.  There are new, fresh faces who seemed oh, so capable and fueled my visions of perhaps witnessing a win!  But alas, I have come to conclude that it is I who caused them to lose by being a witness to the event.  Its the quantum mechanics explanation of why the Orioles keep losing.  Here is a lovely animation that explains how an observed particle behaves differently than an unobserved particle – I know it makes no sense but that’s physics and that’s baseball….

Sighed the Snake

I don’t know why but this song popped into my head while at work and demanded to be heard.  Its a great song and a great lesson to be learned.  The YouTube video I used has no video but it is one of the better audios of this song on YouTube.  The Snake by the late great Al Wilson:

Its got the making of a good children’s book I think.  Here are the lyrics in case you can’t hear the video:

On her way to work one morning
Down the path along side the lake
A tender hearted woman saw a poor half frozen snake
His pretty colored skin had been all frosted with the dew
“Oh well,” she cried, “I’ll take you in and I’ll take care of you”
“Take me in oh tender woman
Take me in, for heaven’s sake
Take me in oh tender woman,” sighed the snake
She wrapped him up all cozy in a curvature of silk
And then laid him by the fireside with some honey and some milk
Now she hurried home from work that night as soon as she arrived
She found that pretty snake she’d takien in had been revived
“Take me in, oh tender woman
Take me in, for heaven’s sake
Take me in oh tender woman,” sighed the snake
Now she clutched him to her bosom, “You’re so beautiful,” she cried
“But if I hadn’t brought you in by now you might have died”
Now she stroked his pretty skin and then she kissed and held him tight
But instead of saying thanks, that snake gave her a vicious bite
“Take me in, oh tender woman
Take me in, for heaven’s sake
Take me in oh tender woman,” sighed the snake
“I saved you,” cried that woman
“And you’ve bit me even, why?
You know your bite is poisonous and now I’m going to die”
“Oh shut up, silly woman,” said the reptile with a grin
“You knew damn well I was a snake before you took me in
“Take me in, oh tender woman
Take me in, for heaven’s sake
Take me in oh tender woman,” sighed the snake

Robert Culp

Robert Culp passed away today at 79.  Robert Culp was the recipient of the only fan letter I ever mailed.  Yes I did mail Disney about the movie Bullwhip Griffin after seeing it as a kid and they sent me all the info I asked for about Roddy McDowall (wish I had kept that stuff) and yes, I was a card-carrying member of the Leonard Nimoy fan club – but I never sent him any fan mail.  I actually wrote Robert Culp.  He was cool.

Here’s a video from the Greatest American Hero and an interview with him about his character:

Eels End Times?

This is the new intro page to the Eels web page:

eel front page

Apparently “end times” will arrive on January 19, 2010.  There is speculation as to what it all means (check out speculation at Estranged Friends forum if you’re interested).  I personally think that’s the date the beard gets it (and not a moment too soon I might add)!  To back my theory, here is a link to Spinner.com story wherein E supposedly sent in this:  10 Things You Didn’t Know About the Eels singer’s Beard which appeared about the same time the “End Times” front page did.  Case closed.  Frankly, I miss E’s face ….
